A Golden Opportunity

3M to showcase Michael Johnson’s 24-karat gold shoes

LAS VEGAS, THE SUPER SHOW, BOOTH #2225A – January 21, 2001 – Visitors to 3M booth #2225A will have a unique opportunity to see up close the gold shoes made for track superstar and Olympic gold medallist Michael Johnson. 3M Personal Safety Products Department teamed with Nike to produce these one-of-a-kind shoes that incorporate Scotchlite reflective material made with 24-karat gold.

"When Nike approached us with the project, we accepted the challenge and knew we would be doing something we had never done before," said Susan Haider, sales and marketing manager, 3M Personal Safety Products Department. "This project put 3M’s innovation and technical expertise to the test, but a strong team effort enabled us to satisfy a unique request from one of our key customers."

The 3M team developed the material in less than nine months to meet Nike’s timeline, adapting the manufacturing process to produce a special version of Scotchlite reflective material that not only incorporated 24-karat gold, but also had the appearance of real gold. Above all, the material needed to be highly reflective, providing enhanced visibility for the wearer. Each pair of shoes contains approximately five grams of 24-karat gold.

"We have a long-standing relationship with 3M, so they were the obvious choice to produce the 24-karat gold material for Michael’s shoes. Our request was unique because the shoes needed to incorporate real gold and at the same time be highly reflective for visibility purposes," said Juliet Moran, vice president/global brand director for Nike. "3M responded quickly to our request and engineered a reflective material that matched perfectly with our needs."

Based on retroreflective technology, Scotchlite reflective material returns light back to its original source (such as vehicle headlights) to make a wearer more visible to passing motorists. Scotchlite reflective material is commonly found on running shoes, apparel and backpacks.
